Deer Hunting Equipment
High Ground Hunting Club has a full line of support equipment to make our property efficient for hunters and attractive for wildlife. In addition to our farming equipment, we have a multitude of vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, and Go-Devil boats to transport our members to their hunting locale. We also have numerous wells and water-control structures to control flooding along with 9000 decoys to attract waterfowl to our blinds.
Bow Hunting for Deer
Longbows, recurves and compound bows may be used for deer hunting. Equipment fitted with any type of device that holds the string at full or partial draw without aid from the hunter can NOT be used during bow-only season. Crossbows can only be used during crossbow and firearms seasons. Arrows must be fitted with broadhead points with a cutting diameter of at least 7/8-inch wide when hunting deer. Barbed broadheads and field/practice point tips without cutting blades are prohibited for deer hunting. Chemically treated arrows or broadheads, or attachments (pods) containing chemicals, may NOT be used or possessed. There is no minimum draw weight on archery equipment.
Bring with you:
- Compound, recurve, or longbow with a 40lb. minimum draw weight is recommended.
- Arrows fitted with mechanical or fixed blade broadheads
- Your mechanical release, if you use one.
- Warm clothing
- Waterproof boots
- Hat and Facemask
- Gloves
- Hunting License and Tags
High-powered rifle hunting for deer
Any caliber centerfire rifle or centerfire handgun is legal for deer hunting during modern gun season. (Centerfire means a firearm that fires a cartridge by the firing pin striking a primer in the center of the end of the cartridge case.) If you are unsure of whether a firearm uses centerfire ammunition, ask a local gun dealer. A rimfire .22 caliber rifle IS NOT legal for deer hunting.
Semi-automatic and pump action rifles or shotguns able to hold more than a total of 11 rounds (10 in magazine and one in chamber) are NOT legal for deer hunting.
A fully automatic firearm capable of firing more than one round with one trigger pull, or using tracer-bullet, full-metal jacketed ammunition, buckshot or any other type of shotshell ammunition is not legal for deer hunting.

- A centerfire rifle of .243 or larger caliber is recommended.

Muzzleloader hunting for deer
Muzzle-loading rifles or handguns of any caliber are permitted.
Muzzle-loading shotguns no larger than 10 gauge used with slugs only are permitted. A muzzle-loading firearm that can be fired more than once before reloading is permitted, as long as it meets the definition of a muzzle-loading firearm. In-line muzzle-loading rifles are permitted and using telescopic sights (scopes) on muzzleloaders is permitted.

- A .45 or .50 caliber muzzleloader is recommended.

Shotgun hunting for deer
Shotguns up to and including 10 gauge used with slug ammunition are legal. (Most common legal shotgun sizes include .410, 28, 20, 16, 12 and 10-gauge.)
Semi-automatic and pump action rifles or shotguns able to hold more than a total of 11 rounds (10 in magazine and one in chamber) are NOT legal for deer hunting.
Bring with you:
- A 12 or 20 guage shotgun is recommended.
